7 Days - The Story of God's Creation - Day 2 - Air Above, Water Below - Family Devotional

Welcome to the Children's Christian Learning Family Devotional! We are on a 7 part journey to learn about 7 Days - The Story of God's Creation

Before God began His creation, there was absolutely nothing. It's hard to imagine

nothing but God created everything we see from nothing! Nothing existed. Nothing at all. Except, of course, God. He has always existed. (Isaiah 57:15).

Let's look at 7 Days The Story of Gods Creation........

Day 2 - Monday - Air Above, Water Below

God said, “Let there be something to divide the water in two!” So God made the air to divide the water in two. Some of the water was above the air, and some of the water was below it. God named the air “sky.” Evening passed, and morning came. This was the second day. (Genesis 1:6-8).

It's amazing to see God showing us HIs awesome power by simply speaking something into existence. On the second day of creation God separated the water above the earth from the water on the earth, placing the sky between the two.

Air Above

The sky (or our atmosphere) is like a blanket of gasses which protects the earth. Because of the atmosphere the sun does not burn us to death and we do not freeze at night when the sun sets. Out atmosphere is a bit like God you might not be able to see Him but He is there every day keeping us alive. (Colossians 1:17)

The atmosphere contains the air we need to breathe to live. The air is made up of mainly nitrogen, some oxygen, and a tiny amount of other gases such as carbon dioxide. These are finely balanced in just the right amounts, without this precise balance life on earth would not be possible.

Water Below

So when God dived the water He basically took the water and made some go up and some go down, so that the waters were above and below. The earth is covered 70% by water. Water is essential to life on earth, without water we would die in a few days. This is because it plays a part in almost every process that occurs in our bodies. Our bodies are mainly water, and water is a major part of our blood.

Water Above

So where did the water go that God put “above the earth”? We don’t know for sure because the Bible doesn’t give many more details. This could refer to water somewhere in outer space. Another possible explanation is that God placed a layer of water vapour around the earth, high in the atmosphere. Such a layer of water would have created a “greenhouse” effect that could have encouraged a rapid growth of plants and protected the earth’s inhabitants from the damaging rays of the sun. This protection could explain in part the long lives that the first people enjoyed and the volume of water that spilled from the sky in the Flood. (Genesis 6:9–9:17)
